Nano-BioTechnologies and Health

Converging disciplines
Grenoble is the typical place where life sciences meet exact sciences, advanced physics, state of
the art IT and nanotechnology towards medical and biological research and industry. Through the diversity
and excellence of its resources, Grenoble promotes cross sector interactions and fosters a multi
disciplinary climate, which is essential for innovation in bio industry.
Grenoble is already a well established centre for micro and nano technologies with Minatec
, and is also renowned for its strong expertise in structural biology with
the Partnership for Structural Biology, a European joint consortium
between the major very large facilities (ESRF, ILL, IBS).
Laboratories belonging or affiliated to scientific agencies (CEA,
CNRS, Inserm,
Inra ,
Inria Rhône-Alpes
and universities (Joseph Fourier University directory and Grenoble University Hospital
are involved in joint working programs, thereby linking the bridge between fundamental and clinical research.
Diagnosis, identification of therapeutic targets and new therapeutic approaches
represent the domains in which Grenoble is endowed with major scientific expertise, technological
platforms and industrial services and products.
Grenoble strategic development is orientated towards:
- New diagnosis and clinical tools
- New bioactive molecules and new biodevices,
- Modelling of living systems and multi-parameter enhanced virtual reality
in 3 regional therapeutic fields cancerology, neurosciences and infectiology
In order to fulfil these therapeutic challenges, Grenoble concentrates multi disciplinary resources on
technological projects with highly competitive facilities and joint programs with industrial partners.
- High throughput structural analysis of proteins, determination of the 3D structure of proteins of therapeutic interest,
- Exploration of gene functions,
- Creation of nano instrumentation for life sciences: hybrid micro- and nano-systems dedicated
to all biotech and healthcare applications (biochips, lab-on-chips, integrated miniaturized nano-systems...)
- From in vivo imaging to virtual imaging and microscopy both at the cellular and molecular levels,
- Biomolecular chemistry, chemotherapy library, polysaccharide databases, from synthesis of Taxol® and Taxotere® towards optimization of new «smart» molecules.
- Health engineering: telemedecine, telediagnosis, Health Smart Home, biosensors, computer-assisted medicine and surgery.
Grenoble key figures

- 1,500 jobs in life science research
- More than 5,000 students trained each year in biology, chemistry, medicine and
pharmacy seconded by a series of multidisciplinary skills such as information technology (IT), physics,
electronics and business
- About 125 PhD theses in life sciences per year
- 7,000 employees in the life science industry, from medical instrumentation to biotechnology
through diagnosis and biochips
- Leading companies: bioMérieux, BD France, Fresenius, Patheon, Roche Diagnostics, SkyePharma and a large number of smaller biotechs and firms devoted to medical devices.
The cluster is continuously nourished by a dynamic and permanent trend towards creation of innovative companies.
Grenoble Bio parks
Polytec, 1.7 ha land available for building, 10,000 sqm premises available,
located near the CEA facilities.
Biopolis, 3,000 sqm specialized premises, open in mid 2006, located near
Grenoble University Hospital with shared technical equipments and tertiary support services
